BalticTimes — Estonia has been ranked as the best country in the world in terms of internet freedoms in the “Freedom on the Net 2011” study by Freedom House.

“Estonia ranks as one of the most wired and technologically advanced countries in the world,” the study said.

Estonia secured the top spot in the study, followed by the US, Germany, Australia and the UK. At the bottom of the list were Iran, Burma, Cuba and China.

The study was conducted by Freedom House, a US-based NGO that promotes freedom, democracy and human rights worldwide. The study covered 37 countries worldwide.

The study also found that Estonia has had some of the most improvement in internet freedoms, improving its score from 13 in 2009 to 10 in the most recent study.

Overall, the report found that internet usage has boomed alongside “diverse and growing threats to internet freedom”.

Tallinn Airport will get a 65 mln kroons cash injection from the state

In Uncategorized on October 12, 2010 by admin Tagged: , , , , , , , ,

The Estonian government will allocate 65 million kroons from 2011 year’s state budget to the Tallinn Airport, as the result, the airport can lower airport taxes and attract airlines to open more flight routes from Tallinn, LETA/Postimees writes.

The funds will be specifically earmarked for financing spending on security checks, maintenance of rescue teams and managing regional airports, Tartu, Pärnu, Kuressaare, Kärdla, Kihnu and Ruhnu; so far the airport financed these from its own revenue. These are the only three expenses that the state can compensate to airport operator according to the EU regulations.

Tallinn Airport board member Erik Sakkov said that current and potential clients have been sent “very aggressive” new route discounts. This means that if a carrier opens a route from Tallinn, it gets a discount on airport taxes. Sakkov was unwilling to reveal which aviation companies have received the offers.

“It is hard to say it this way. We will become very attractive for low-cost carriers too,” Sakkov responded to the question of how many percent discount is offered.

Currently two classic low-cost carriers have flights from Tallinn, easyJet and Air Baltic. Ryanair, that departs from Riga, would also be welcome. The whole 65 mln kroons could be spent on the discounts.
